If a company tells you their bed bug dog is 100% effective, be vary wary. No dog (or human) is 100% effective in detecting bed bugs, and some are much less so

K-9 Sweeps was asked to bring in Sara, the only known dog in Las Vegas to sniff out bed bugs, to help with an on-going bed bug problem. The pest control company who has the contract for the hotel was having a problem locating the source of the infestation. Bed bugs are very difficult not only to find but to control and often PMP’s need specialized equipment.

According to experts at the University of California Davis, up to 85 percent of pests are found hiding near beds. However, a trained professional is often required and can determine the extensiveness of an infestation. Bedbugs are difficult to locate because they like dark conditions. They are relatively small and live in areas such as picture frames, cracks between the wall and baseboards, in cracks and crevices, between a mattress and box springs, places where the carpet meets the wall and inside wall outlets. A thorough inspection is vital to finding all harborage locations.

The health district is on the case investigating reports of bed bugs at a local motel. Several guests complained to Eyewitness News that they were bitten by the bugs and some of them are covered in bites! Restifo, owner of a company called K-9 Sweeps, brought Sara to Las Vegas in December. Since then, she has put her unusual skills to use in homes and businesses throughout the valley. Bedbugs are tiny parasites that inhabit beds, carpeting, furniture of both the fabric and wicker variety, and any other surface that offers them access to human hosts. Once they find one, they'll feed on its blood. The result, in many cases, is itching and a reddish skin rash.
