The old adage there's no such thing as bad publicity doesn't carry any credence with hoteliers. They know that even a whispered rumor can have a disastrous effect on business. Websites that detail horror-laced reports of being eaten alive by bed bugs during an overnight stay in a hotel or motel play on growing public hysteria about these blood-sucking parasites. Fanned by a blitz of media attention, an accusation can instantly damage a hotel's hard-earned reputation and frighten away guests.

The city’s bed bug infestation has grown so quickly and drastically that the blood-sucking crawlers have spread outside homes and are latching on to Torontonians at work — and could soon spread on public transit and even in movie theatres, researchers say. The city is not ready for the havoc to come. A report on bed bugs, funded by the city and the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, released this week noted a dramatic 1,500 reports of bed bug infestations to Toronto Public Health between March, 2008 to October, 2008. There were 46 reports in 2003, the first time complaints of bed bugs were recorded.

The rapid resurgence of the bed bug, Cimex lectularius, in the United States has created the most difficult pest management challenge in a generation. Infestations have been likened to the proverbial “perfect storm” (Potter, 2006) because citizens are not accustomed to being bitten by blood-sucking parasites while they are sleeping. Moreover, since bed bugs tend to congregate in sensitive places (beds and bedrooms), pest management firms are concerned about applying pesticides for fear of reprisal. Curtailment of organophosphate and carbamate insecticide use indoors has depleted the arsenal of effective bed bug products, which has resulted in application of mainly pyrethroids to which resistance has been shown to be widespread (Romero et al., 2007ab). Tolerance for the presence of bed bugs in homes and businesses is essentially zero, and lawsuits in the U.S. have become increasingly common (Donaldson, 2006).

The key to controlling the costs is to find them early and often. "Bed bugs are very difficult to detect with the naked eye by even the most skilled and trained inspector, they lay up to 5 eggs per day and can survive as long as a year on one feeding. Making matters worse, there are no currently effective treatments to kill their eggs. More than 10 years of research both here and abroad has confirmed that one of the most effective technologies available for bed bug detection is trained and certified dogs. According to Sosa, "...a dog's keen, superior sense of smell enables them to locate bed bugs that are virtually invisible to the naked eye with better than 95 percent accuracy and to do it very quickly. They can even distinguish between live and dead bugs making them an invaluable tool in the fight against this growing epidemic."
